The research now makes clear that for all children, a mastery of phonemic awareness, and explicit teaching of phonics training, is the best way to ensure the successful development of reading.
The "Science of Reading" has been studied for some decades by linguists, educational psychologists, neuroscientists, and others. Their conclusions are acknowledged and embraced by the big three international research studies - the Rose Report, the National Inquiry into the Teaching of Literacy, and the biggest reading survey ever done, the National Reading Panel.
However, given the sometimes contested nature of the field, and the lag between research and dissemination into the classroom, many teachers are not necessarily up to date on the latest research. This set of resources is meant to offer teachers help in understanding a complex but vital field.
The resources take the form of a set of short explanatory videos, accompanied in each case by a background paper which provides details of the research it is based on.
